I’ve been passionate about tutoring since I was 10 years old, helping my classmates with schoolwork. Today, over three decades later, I’m even more passionate about tutoring.

My name is Arvin Vohra, and I work with students of all ages and abilities. Some of my students are highly ambitious and competitive, and come to me for help with honors classes, AP exams, Ivy League admissions, and SAT/ACT prep. For them, I function like a private coach for an Olympic hopeful and help them surpass their local, national, and international competitors.

Others come to me because they’re struggling with a subject. I help with nearly every subject, including math, English, every science, history, and unusual or interdisciplinary courses. I also help people who are struggling with standardized tests, often the SAT or ACT. I’ve helped many D students become A students, and encouraged them to achieve their true potential. Many of my students whom others had written off as hopeless made it to the Ivy League.

On this website, I’d like to share with you how I can help your child achieve the extraordinary.

About Me

My passion for education started early. I took my first college course at age 13, learned algebra in a few weeks to skip a grade in math, and had the highest SAT and PSAT scores in my graduating class (my SAT scores were 790 M, 790 V). I also got scores of 5 on ten AP exams. For six of those exams, I didn’t even take the AP course, but instead relied on intensive outside study. Today, many of my students take AP exams without the corresponding courses.

I graduated from Brown University in 2001 with a B.Sc. in mathematics. After college, I got perfect scores on both the GRE and the GMAT, finishing each exam with over an hour to spare. I also passed two actuarial exams in the same week-long testing period.

I started my tutoring business in 2001. In early 2002, I quit my corporate job and made tutoring my full-time job. Since then, I’ve gotten to work with students from all over the country in my tutoring programs and seminars. I’ve been interviewed many times about education on various major media. My first book, The Equation for Excellence, was published in both the U.S. and China. My most recent book, Invitation to the Ivies, has been featured on major morning news shows, popular radio stations, Yahoo! News, and various local news shows.

But none of that is what makes me the right tutor for your child. There are only three things you need to know about me as an educator. The first is that I notice tiny details that most educators don’t notice, and I use those details to figure out how to make the right tutoring program for each specific student. Often, the tiniest clue can unlock the mystery of a specific student’s current situation.

The second is that I never give up. Long after everyone else has given up on a student, I’m still in the student’s corner, cheering the student on and helping build better techniques. Some of my students’ schools have told them that they had no mathematical chance of getting into a particular college; time and time again, I’ve helped students prove the naysayers wrong. I’ve helped students consigned to remedial math move into honors math and then skip a grade in math.

The final reason is the most important: I have uncompromising, rigorous standards. I don’t rely on shortcuts or band-aid solutions. If there’s a problem, I help the student actually address it, not just go through the motions. If a student wants to compete at the highest levels, I help them build the real skill required. My job is to encourage, to teach, to inspire. It’s not to coddle. I don’t do students’ homework for them or write papers for them. To me, that’s giving up on a student’s education, and I don’t do that. I know that each student can achieve the extraordinary, and that high standards of excellence are necessary to help students reach their full potential.

Below, I discuss Invitation to the Ivies with Good Day Chicago’s Terrence Lee:

Ages

Most of my students are 8-18. I also work with college graduates who are preparing for the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, or another exam. Additionally, I help with medical school, law school, business school, and graduate school application essays. Occasionally, I work with unusually precocious students who are younger than 8.

Skill Levels

I work with students at every starting skill level. Some of my students have significant learning differences, including ADHD, dyslexia, and dyscalculia. Other students have already skipped multiple grades. I’ve worked with 12-year-old students on multivariable calculus, for example.

A student’s starting skill level can be anything; I design every part of the program based on a student’s personality and starting skill. For example, the way I work with hyper-confident students who are at the top of their math classes is very different from how I work with students struggling with math phobias. Even when I work with twins, their respective programs are usually quite different in both style and content.

Topics

I help students with every subject (other than foreign languages), from the elementary school level to the AP/IB level. I also help with every major standardized test, including the SAT, PST, ACT, SSAT, ISEE, HSPT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, and most AP and IB exams. There are three general categories of tutoring that I offer, but I can help with nearly any situation or request.

The first category is Normal Tutoring. This is when you need help with a class or standardized test. If you’re struggling with chemistry, English papers, the SAT, or something else, I can help you master the material.

The second category is Competitive Tutoring. This is for ambitious, competitive students who are looking to outcompete other ambitious, competitive students. These programs range from my Perfect Scorer Mindset SAT/ACT program to my Ivy Strategy program. These programs also include help with honors classes, AP classes, and IB classes. This also includes tutoring for physics and calculus.

The last category is Exceptional Tutoring. These are the programs that take individualized education to the next level. They include things like my AP Integrated Humanities program, in which students prepare for all eight AP English and History exams in one mega-course. It also includes highly individualized tutorials, which have ranged from writing rap music to mystery novels. Students in these programs also enjoy an obvious advantage in Ivy Admissions strategy, since their extracurriculars are both more unusual and more highly developed than those of their competitors. Exceptional Tutoring is also part of most of my tutoring programs for homeschoolers.

How We Meet

I use a combination of Zoom and Slack for tutoring sessions…but this is not Zoom like you’re used to. For Zoom, I use a “real” camera (a Sony A7V mirrorless DSLR with a 90 mm macro lens for enhanced detail), a digital whiteboard with a custom color palette, and a high-end microphone. If you have an extremely fast computer, I can also broadcast in uncompressed HD for extreme sharpness. This helps to better communicate facial expressions and other forms of nonverbal communication, while also creating a more immediate and engaging experience for the student. This is especially important for hearing-impaired students, since the sharpness allows easier reading of lips and facial expressions. My system also allows students to easily record or caption tutoring sessions.

My Slack system is enhanced by extensive custom coding, primarily written by me, which allows me to use all kinds of quirky and engaging techniques during tutoring sessions. Just as movies can be more engaging than plays, this type of online tutoring can be more engaging than in-person tutoring. It would be close to impossible to recreate these kinds of “special effects” in a physical classroom.

Fees and Contracts

My programs are all pay-as-you-go, with no required contracts. I believe in earning your business by making each tutoring session excellent.

My rates are $200 per hour.

The Benefits of Multi-Subject Tutoring

Many of my students work with me on multiple topics. This allows for increases in efficiency and effectiveness.

For example, students who work with me on both algebra and chemistry can build skills that are used in both redox reactions and simultaneous equations. They can learn each skill in a way that helps in both areas. Similarly, students who work with me on both English and Ivy Strategy can learn to make their English papers look like successful Harvard admission essays.

Below, you can see an example of the types of elegant, fast, reliable solutions I teach in my SAT tutoring programs.

Guess what? These same techniques can help you supercharge your performance in algebra or precalculus!
